Dermal fillers are gels that are strategically injected into the skin to add volume to the face. While there are several types of dermal fillers that are available, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) dermal fillers are the most commonly used formulas. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a sugar naturally produced by your body. As a water-binding molecule, it has the ability to hold 1000X its weight in water. HA found in the skin adds volume and plumpness to its surface. HA fillers typically last 6-12 months. The duration of your treatment results will depend on the extent of the area treated, the amount of filler used, and your own body’s makeup and metabolic rate.

A neuromodulator is an injectable muscle relaxer that blocks the release of chemicals that cause muscle contractions to reduce the appearance of wrinkles that can appear in conjunction with facial expressions. Lines that appear around the sides of your mouth, horizontal lines across the forehead, crow’s feet, and wrinkles on the side of your nose are common examples of dynamic wrinkles that are created through facial expression and can be effectively treated with a neuromodulator.
Although Botox® is a widely known injectable muscle relaxer, there are many other options on the market, like Xeomin®, Dysport® and JeuveauTM. As with dermal fillers, you should check with your healthcare provider to determine which product best fits your goals and budget the best.
Unlike dermal fillers, results from a neuromodulator treatment are not immediate. Most patients see noticeable results within a week. Neuromodulators are widely considered to last anywhere from 3-6 months, but may last longer or shorter depending on the individual and the size and severity of the treatment area.
Injectable muscle relaxers can be seen as both preventative and therapeutic. While the treatment was originally designed to reduce the amount of already-visible wrinkles on a patient’s face, younger patients are also considering this treatment as a preventative way to take control of the signs of aging by reducing the chance or severity of wrinkles before they start. Most often wrinkles are first noticeable when we are making facial expressions. Over time, this temporary wrinkling can lead to permanent creasing and lines.
Since dermal fillers add volume to the face, their results are noticeable whether your face is in the middle of an expression or if it is “resting” and expressionless. Due to volumizing properties, dermal fillers can be used for filling in facial hollows or augmenting and reshaping contours of the face and its features. While dermal fillers may reduce the severity of some expression-related wrinkling, they are not designed with this as a primary benefit and do not limit the movement of facial expression.
Conversely, neuromodulators are specifically designed to limit the facial movements and reduce “dynamic” wrinkles that happen along with facial expressions. Neuromodulators won’t affect volume loss or wrinkles that one can see when the face is resting.
Both dermal fillers and neuromodulators have a varying degree of effect relative to the amount of product and placement. For example, it is possible to limit facial movement with neuromodulators to the degree that it reduces wrinkling, but still allows a certain amount of expression so the face doesn’t become “frozen.”
Dermal fillers have an immediate result, while neuromodulators show a change within a week. Dermal filler results typically last from 6-12 months, while results from neuromodulators typically last 3-6 months. Both treatments are minimally invasive, have a low incidence of side effects, and are approved by the FDA for safety. Either treatment should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional that you trust.
Ultimately, dermal fillers and neuromodulators can both be used to treat the signs of aging, but they work on two very different principles. Depending on the patient and desired results, many doctors will suggest a combination of both treatments as they can be used in unison and implemented at the same time. This approach provides patients with the “best of both worlds” and works to soften or reduce dynamic and static signs of aging simultaneously. To support the effects of these treatments, a good skincare regimen and regular use of sunscreen is the key to overall skin health and vibrancy.
